The MarkerDog

When tracing back through a pedigree (see section on Tracing Generations), it can often be difficult to find where the dog you just clicked on has moved to.  The whole pedigree shifts to the left as the original root dog disappears.  With a new root dog, the whole pedigree is regenerated, and the ancestors may shift to unexpected positions, often far removed from where you started (especially with deep pedigrees).

To help with your navigation, BMDPed keeps track of the "Current Dog" which is the last dog you clicked on in the pedigree.  A little Berner Icon, called the "MarkerDog" will mark the Current Dog, and you can quickly see where that dog has moved to when you do the trace-back.

For example, here is Dog 7874, and we have put the MarkerDog on dam #1137 by clicking on it.  Here is the pedigree before we "TraceBack" on dam 1137:

Now, click on the "TraceBack" yellow symbol for dam #1137 and see how she moves down to the bottom half of  the pedigree -- difficult to find without the MarkerDog:

Multiple Occurrences (Inbreeding)

In addition, you will sometimes find that a given dog appears more than once in the ancestry (a sign of inbreeding).  The MarkerDog will then appear more than once to highlight the multiple occurrences.

As an example (see below), bring up the pedigree for Dog # 7879 (or Search for "Roulettes Ditto of Luci").  Not far back in the pedigree, you will find sire #433 "Sanctuary Woods Gordo".  Click on Gordo to make him the current dog.

Several MarkerDogs will appear showing the multiple occurrences:
