A Search Scenario

Here is a scenario you can try to illustrate some of the capabilities of the Search window:

Suppose you are trying to locate a bitch whom you remember has very good hips and you recall that her name was Heide but you forget who the breeder was.

Go the Search menu, make sure the “Name,Owner,Breeder,Dates” tab is selected

Type in part of the name, let’s say “heid” in the “Dog Name Partial Key” box

Click on the Sex radio button “F” (for Female)

You will see many entries that begin with “Heidi”;  scroll down to see them all (note the behaviour of the scroll bar; this is typical for large databases and is explained in more detail below).

You cannot find the one you are looking for, so try pressing the “Imbedded” button.  This will find names with “heid” imbedded within, as well as at the beginning.  Notice that the imbedded column is shaded in colour to remind you that this is an imbedded search:

There are now far too many names, so let’s narrow the search.

You recall the owner’s (or was it the breeder’s) name was Smith, so try typing “sm” in the “Owner Partial key” field.

All the dog’s disappear, but notice that the “Imbedded” button has been released (this speeds the initial search).

Press “Imbedded” again, and you will see a small selection of dogs, hopefully the one you are looking for.

You can remove the “sm” from “Owner Partial Key” and try it in “Breeder Partial Key” and find other Heides.

In this case, we have found Valleyvu's Heidi v Gartenhugl, so we click on that dog to highlight it.

Once you click on the dog that you want, buttons along the bottom let you open the dog in the Current Pedigree, a new Docked pedigree, or a new Floating pedigree:

The Help button on this SearchWindow gives another example to try.
