Pedigrees
Docked and Floating Pedigrees
Concepts
The fundamental window for BMDPed
is the PedigreeWindow. Multiple Tabs for pedigrees can be
opened in the MainWindow. Tabbed
pedigrees are also referred to as "Docked" pedigrees and are ideal for smaller
screens, as only one is visible at a time.
You can right-click on any dog to create
new "Docked" or "Floating" pedigrees.
Docked means they are in the MainWindow as tabs.
Floating means they are undocked, free-floating pedigrees (and no tabs),
capable of opening their own private Info screen.
You can right click any pedigree to
change its Docked/Floating status, so you can have multiple pedigree windows
(and InfoWindows) visible simultaneously if you have a large enough screen.
You cannot undock the last pedigree remaining in the MainWindow; there
must always be at least one docked pedigree.

Examples
By right clicking on any desired dog in
the pedigree, you can select to open another pedigree in a separate tab in the
MainWindow (known as a “docked” pedigree):
 |
|
To get the context menu shown here, make sure you right-click on one of the
dogs in the pedigree, not on the background area.
Now you have two tabs open (note that
the second tab opens with a different background colour; this is used later to
match pedigrees with other functions, such as InfoWindows):
 |
|
Right clicking on the background area will provide you with different
options, such as the ability to dock/float/close the current pedigree.
Tip: if you want to open a new pedigree
for a dog not currently shown on the screen, right click the background and
select “Search” (or use the Search top menu); more details are shown in the Searching section.
Similarly, by right clicking a dog and
selecting “New Pedigree (Floating)”...
 |
|
...you can open a separate undocked
(floating) window with a new pedigree:

|
|
Pedigree Windows open with a random
colour for the background. Change
colours if you don't like the first one (right click the background for the
context menu, or you can use Ctrl+F2).
Info screen for each
pedigree matches the Pedigree's colour (see Info Windows).
Use the three drop-down
"combo-boxes" at
the bottom of any Pedigree Window to adjust the number of generations, the
length of the interconnecting "bars", and the vertical spacing between
dog names.:

|
|
The block of four "arrows" in
the bottom right of the pedigree window is a Navigator that can be used to scroll up and down
through the database (also see Searching).
Note that by right clicking this Navigator, you can select a different
sort order, such as "Numerically by DogNumber" or
"Alphabetically by Name":

|
|
A Status bar at the bottom of the
pedigree shows ALL dog info when your cursor passes over a dog in the pedigree.
This is useful if some lines are truncated by a shrunken pedigree window.
